The art reached its pinnacle in the era of Zain-ul-Abidin, famously known as BUDSHAH 1420- 1470. Earlier carving was mainly done on the walls, doors and pillars of shrines, mosques and on the royal buildings. In todays contemporary market, Kashmiri walnut carving is recognizable because of its color and the tone and its combination with local craftsmanship depicting certain established motifs in a highly intricate and miniaturized form in the traditional established styles. Walnut wood has an inherit sheen which comes on its own when polished with wax. The wood from the root of the tree is almost black and the braches have the highest color. The cost of the wood differs from each part with the food from the root being the most expensive.
